Around 9 to 10 teenagers in a group can develop acne but it can be very mild. 3 to 10 teenagers suffer a serious case of acne that requires immediate treatment to prevent scarring. If definitive skin care isn’t implemented, acne can last for several years.

Causes

The factors that lead to acne are – accumulation of bacteria, overproduction of oil, irregular shedding of dead skin cells. Acne is caused when the hair follicles become blocked with dead skin cells and oil. Since hair follicles are connected to sebaceous glands, they secrete an oily substance which is known as sebum, for lubrication of skin and hair. The sebum travels upwards through the hair shaft and onto the openings of these follicles finally reaching the surface of the skin.

When the body produces excessive sebum and dead skin cells begin to accumulate, the two can together form a plug which invites bacterial agents to thrive and grow. The development of bacterial agents residing on the skin surface can build a plug that leads to bulging of the follicular walls. This can cause a whitehead to occur however if the plug is open to surface pollutants then can form a blackhead.

Pimples are a result of inflammation which causes raised red spots that are a consequence of blocked follicles Infection and inflammation leads to lump formations underneath the skin known as cysts. Despite the fact that acne can occur in distinct forms, it eventually causes irritations that leave behind scars due to excessive scratching.
