“We are tied to the ocean. And when we go back to the sea, whether it is to sail or to watch – we are going back from whence we came”.
John F. Kennedy
The vast resources of the underwater world have been harvested by humans over the centuries, and in Ireland there is an age old tradition of using Irish seaweed for all sorts of health benefits, including the treatment of skin complaints ranging from the mild to severe with the first record of it being used by 9th century monks.
As legend would have it, the fearsome 16th century Irish Pirate Queen, Grace O’Malley, bathed in seaweed following her many successful battles and plundering of the high seas.
High numbers of English Victorians travelled to the impoverished West Coast of Ireland to spend anything from a few days to a few weeks soaking in the seaweed baths which were found to be beneficial for skin complaints, arthritic joints, prostatic swelling and other health complaints.
Roscara Wild Irish Seaweed has been inspired by the these centuries old traditions and the ancient and elemental purity of the ocean around us.
Nature itself has provided us with a renewable source of healthy, simple supplements for your skin.
The benefits to skin, particularly troubled skin, from swimming in the ocean are well documented.
You are very welcome to come visit us but rest assured that a swim in the temperatures of the North Atlantic Ocean will stay in your memory for ever!
I am absolutely thrilled to present the Roscara Wild Irish Seaweed range to you so that you may enjoy all of its benefits in the comfort and convenience of your home.
Roscara is environmentally friendly and committed to responsible stewardship over our precious natural resources.
Our seaweed is a very important part of our ecosystem, providing habitat and food to a number of marine species and we take protection of the marine environment very seriously.
We use a time honoured crofting tradition and our Irish Moss is sustainably and seasonally harvested by hand.
The seaweed is not uprooted, but cut above the roots, allowing the moss to regenerate and grow back…the way grass grows back after cutting the lawn.
You will see on ordering Roscara, that we do not use additional boxes for our product. A boxed product may look prettier, but we do not use them as our priority is to reduce any impact on the environment and costs to you.
The container and packaging is recyclable.
Roscara is hand packaged and hand labelled by us.
Where Does Our Seaweed Come From?
Roscara Soothing Seaweed Lotion takes advantage of the distinctive benefits of the beautiful Irish Carrageen Moss and the main active ingredient in Roscara is extracted from superb, wild harvested and organic Carrageen Moss which is sustainably and seasonally hand harvested from the clean, clear, unpolluted waters of the beautiful Rathlin Island and the North Coast of County Antrim, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, where it grows in abundance.
Roonivoolin is the most southerly townland on Rathlin Island, famous for its puffin colony, wild landscape and a family of grey seals, and it is here that Roscara was developed by Liam McBride, following an ancient recipe that was handed down to him from his grandmother.
Kilcar is a beautiful part of Ireland, nestled between Ireland’s premier fishing port of Killybegs and the majestic, raw and natural beauty that is Sliabh Liag Cliffs in the parish of Glencolmcille. The Sliabh Liag Cliff walks are now part of the Appalachian Trail, and are the highest sea cliffs in Europe.
Kilcar is separated from the town of Ardara by the spectacular Glengesh Pass which is one of the most photographed views in all of Ireland.
The area is gateway to the Donegal Gaeltacht area where approximately 22% of the population are native Irish speakers.
This area is rich in folklore and peppered with megalithic tombs and historic sites, many of which are not widely known about, outside the local area and Matthew Broderick and his wife, Sarah Jessica Parker, spend a lot of time in the region after purchasing their holiday home there.
This wild and glorious landscape is diverse, with mountains, lochs and sandy beaches which are kissed with pollution free Atlantic waves from which our seaweed is sourced for our range of Roscara Wild Irish Seaweed products.
The natural healing properties of Roscara come from the simplicity of its origins as it sourced from a single sea plant whose healing properties have been recorded by the ancients…a wonder ingredient that is often overlooked.
Irish moss, which isn’t really a moss at all, is actually seaweed. Ranging from yellow-green to dark red and purple, the seaweed grows on the rocky Atlantic coast of Ireland and has been a miracle medical cure for thousands of years.
This ability to concentrate trace elements from the sea renders our Irish Moss a powerhouse of health enhancing properties and a source of nutrients that are 8 times more potent than they are in any land plant.
No terrestrial plant even remotely approaches seaweed as a source of metabolically required minerals and scientists worldwide are continuing to study the beneficial uses for seaweed.
Roscara’s wonder seaweed ingredient contains vitamins A,B,C,D,E and K to help nourish skin.
Roscara’s wonder seaweed ingredient is an excellent source of life-enhancing minerals and contains a very impressive list of elements of which our human bodies are made, including phosphorous,manganese,selenium,pectin,beta-carotene, protein, bromine, sulfur compounds and a number of amino-acids such as taurine.
Irish Moss seaweed extract is effective in treating problem skin as it contains powerful antioxidants.
Antioxidants help to defend cells against damage from free radicals and toxins in the body and by blocking the effects of these harmful substances, the body is able to produce healthy skin cells. Many of the uncomfortable effects on a person with problem skin comes from the flaking, dry skin, irritation and itch.
The antioxidant power of Roscara helps improve the overall condition of the skin, and as Roscara is a powerful moisturiser, it can work wonders for dry, flaky skin which helps reduce the itching and irritation.
Roscara is rich in sulfated polysaccharide compounds which have been scientifically proven to have anti-viral properties and inhibit the effect of viruses on the skin which cause cold sores.
In addition, polysaccharides also have anti-inflammatory properties.
With the benefit of the polysaccharides in seaweed extract, the natural anti-inflammatory properties can help to reduce the redness and irritation, which will prevent trauma to the skin caused by scratching.
We are delighted to present Roscara to you so that you may enjoy the soothing, calming, healing, distinctive benefits of Irish Moss in the comfort and convenience of your home at an affordable price.
