What is Acne?
Acne is a skin condition which causes red pimples on the skin due to infected or inflamed sebaceous glands. The medical term is “Acne Vulgaris”.
It is most common on the face but may also occur on the back, chest and neck.
The severity of acne can range depending upon the amount of spots present.
Who Gets It?
Usually, adolescents and young adults between 12 to 25 years are afflicted with acne.
But, many adults also suffer from the condition and it affects a staggering 50 million people in the US annually.
Young boys tend to suffer from acne more often than girls.
Is Acne Contagious?
What Causes Acne?
Acne is caused when the hair follicles become blocked with dead skin cells and oil.
Since hair follicles are connected to sebaceous glands, they secrete an oily substance which is known as sebum, for lubrication of skin and hair.
The sebum travels upwards through the hair shaft and onto the openings of these follicles finally reaching the surface of the skin.
The factors that lead to acne are –
- accumulation of bacteria
- overproduction of oil,
- irregular shedding of dead skin cells.
When the body produces excessive sebum and dead skin cells begin to accumulate, the two can together form a plug which invites bacterial agents to thrive and grow.
The development of bacterial agents residing on the skin surface can build a plug that leads to bulging of the follicular walls.
This can cause a whitehead to occur however if the plug is open to surface pollutants then can form a blackhead.
Pimples are a result of inflammation which causes raised red spots that are a consequence of blocked follicles.
Infection and inflammation leads to lump formations underneath the skin known as cysts.
Despite the fact that acne can occur in distinct forms, it eventually causes irritations that leave behind scars due to excessive scratching.
Signs and Symptoms of Acne
Common Acne Triggers
Every human being undergoes certain hormonal changes inside their body that causes a massive amount of heat to be produced.
This leads to eruptions on the skin to release the heat.
Hormonal changes in the blood in the form of androgens for body and progesterone for girls, often leads to acne.
Hormonal changes in the body during the gestation period (pregnancy) and effects of contraceptives can lead to acne as well.
Research indicates that acne is caused as a result of the food you consume.
When people are on a heavy diet of fatty foods, the proteins produce a massive amount of heat in the body.
Plenty of individuals consume drugs like corticosteroids, androgens and in some case lithium that causes massive eruption of acne. A lot of people believe that acne is caused due to dirt but in truth acne is a result of oil accumulation.
Although acne can adversely affect adolescent group however 20% of the cases are found in adults. It commonly begins from puberty and continues till the age of 25. The case of acne can become very serious if not treated on time. Women are more likely to suffer from acne during their 30s than men however the case is quite mild. Hereditary and hormonal traits are more likely to cause acne than any other granted reason. Specifically if one has to understand he/she suffers from acne, the following symptoms should be noted –
1. Whiteheads and Blackheads: Referred to as comedones, acne is created when the surfaces of the hair follicles become clogged with oil, grease and bacterial growth. If the growth occurs on the inside without exposing the clog, the condition is referred to as whiteheads. However if the clog is exposed to exterior pollutants, it blackens and is known as blackheads.
Painful, solid lumps that develop underneath the surface of the skin.
They’re formed as a result of secretions that accumulate deep within the skin or the hair follicles.
Smaller bumps on the skin, characterized by their red colour and tender texture.
Often the most painful and uncomfortable symptom of acne.
They are often filled with pus and are found under the dermal layer.
They are like boils and can be very unpleasant since they cause scarring.
Usually found on the face and are tender, red bumps which usually contain white pus at the centre.
You should never pop a pimple as that could cause scars.
